Broadway Barbershop // Promotional Video

Quick Social Media Promo Video Process

If you’re not sure about getting a video made, I detail my process from concept to complete for a short sharp promotional video for social media and a website header. It’s great way to raise awareness and impress first time visitors to your website or social channel.

The Concept

John the co-owner called me up needing a promotional video made for The Broadway Barbershop in Worthing. I asked him what he wanted the video to do for him. He wanted to raise the profile of the shop. I asked where the video would be distributed and he told me social media and in the header of a website. Everyone understands grooming and many people don’t have the sound on for websites and social media so we didn’t need any interviews or narration. I just had to show as much of their range of services, products, location and decor as possible. John agreed so I went about creating a shot list of everything I needed to capture.

Due to the short time frame we both had, I asked him to send me any videos that had inspired him and we narrowed down the backing music track using my royalty-free music library. The concept creation took very little of John’s time and was conducted entirely over the phone and on WhatsApp. Video creation doesn’t have to be too complicated when communication is good and objectives are kept simple.

The Shoot

With a clear idea of the look and feel that John wanted I headed down to his shop to get filming. I was already shooting with the music track in mind. This helps determine the length and movement of the shots I was creating. I also had a few sequences in mind and the essential parts each were on my shotlist. The shoot took 3 hours including the drone work.

The Edit

As the shoot was local, I was able to get back to my studio straight away and edit the video that afternoon. Having the music track sorted is essential the getting the edit done. The shot list also sped up my edit and made sure nothing got missed. Most of my time is spent in the planning and editing stages of the video production process. Normally the more time you spend planning the less time you spend on the shoot or sweating too much in the edit. In this case, I was able to send John a link to a private version (aka ‘the first cut’) of the video for him to view on my Vimeo channel. He sent me a very brief WhatsApp message stating that he and the other co-owner love it but that there were two minor changes to make. These I made the following day and John signed off on the video. I then sent him a copy of the video via Wetransfer so he could put it anywhere on his socials and his website.

The Result

The video has already had almost 16K views on Instagram and is at the top of his website. The video exceeded his and his team's expectations and they have already asked if I can shoot the advert and training videos for their academy when it opens. With a great client like this, I’m not going to say no.
